Welcome to Geoengineer Donors website!

GEOENGINEER.ORG DONOR’S FUND

PURPOSE

The purpose of this activity is to encourage the participation of geoengineers-donors in the decision making and the activities of Geoengineer.org. Donors of our Center participate in the decisions associated with the projects that are to be funded. Our goal is to build an active group of passionate geoengineers that will impact with their donations and decisions the practice, research and education of geoengineering globally.

Donors do not need to make large donations. Small annual donations of $20 are also welcome.

HOW IT WORKS

Procedure

  • On an annual basis, and starting in 2008, donations received by Geoengineer.org are deposited in a “Donor’s Fund”. The total amount available in the Fund is used to financially support projects that will benefit the broader geoengineering community.
  • In January of each year, Geoengineer.org will be releasing a “Call for Proposals”.
  • Interested individuals (e.g. Faculty or practicing engineers) will submit a proposal outlining the scope, schedule and budget of the proposed task.
  • The proposals will be reviewed by a 3-person “Donor’s Fund Review Board” which will select the top 5-10 proposals (depending on the quality of the proposals and the amount of funds available).
  • The selected proposals are then presented to the Donors for a vote.
  • Each donor has a number of votes that is directly related to the amount of donation. Donors may assign votes to the selected projects, based on their preference.
  • Projects that accumulate the largest number of votes are approved.

An example
A donor receives 1 vote for each $. Thus, if one donor makes a donation of $200, she/he will have 200 votes. If a total amount of $10,000 is collected, the specific donor will control 200/10,000=2% of the total votes. Thus, the larger the donation amount, the more influence has the donor on the final decision regarding the total funds.

EXAMPLE OF PROJECTS THAT CAN BE FUNDED

The type of projects that can be funded by this fund is essentially limitless. Examples of projects are:
  • Development of online courses;
  • Development of resource web sites or databases;
  • Small research projects;
  • Development of educational/instructional or informative videos;
  • Development of galleries;
  • Other resources useful to the community;

2008-2009 Geoengineer.org Donors Fund

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

DEADLINE: MAY 15 2009

Geoengineer.org through the Geoengineer.org Donors Fund solicits proposals for geo-projects that can make a valuable contribution to the geoengineering profession. Preference is given to projects that will make an impact internationally.

Proposers should submit electronically all required documents as explained below. This includes information about the scope of the proposal, the work plan, the schedule and budget as well as a cv of the proposer.

Proposed projects may include any of the following:
  • Development of online course(s);
  • Development of online resource(s) or database(s);
  • Development of educational/instructional or informative resource(s) (e.g. development of manuals, animations, videos, or powerpoint slides);
  • Development of a gallery;
  • Other resources that are useful to the geoengineering community; For questions, contact Dr. Dimitrios Zekkos
It is expected that the deliverable of the project will benefit the profession and will become widely available to the Geoengineering community through Geoengineer.org.

Depending on the success of the program in the future, and the amount of donations, small research projects may be funded. However, the presently available amount is considered too small to fund a research project.

Each individual may submit only one proposal each year. Proposals submitted by a group of individuals are allowed. The proposal has to explain what the responsibilities of each member of the group are.

The duration of the project for 2009 is 1 year starting September 1st, 2009.

Funding for each project will be weighted towards the second half of the duration of the project, i.e. the awardee will have to demonstrate that progress is being made, before any funds are released.

Eligibility

Academicians, practicing engineers, and researchers from all countries are eligible to submit a proposal.

Graduate students may also submit a proposal. However, the qualifications of the proposer (cv) is a major consideration in the selection process. A successful track record in completing projects on time and on budget is preferable.

Proposal Submission Guidelines

Each proposer must submit the following documents:
  • Completed Proposal Form.
  • 2-page cv, which should include, educational background, positions held (academic or in the industry), and any other relevant material such as publications, activities, initiatives etc.
Please email the completed form in Word format to secretariat@geoengineer.org by 12 pm Eastern US Time, May 15 2009. Late proposals will not be accepted.

Assessment of Proposals

Proposals will be pre-screened by a 3- person "Donor's Fund Review Board". The review board will evaluate proposals based on the following criteria:
  • Completeness and organization of the proposal;
  • Merit of the proposal: Is it valuable to the geoengineering community? Is there a need for it? Can the community use the deliverable through Geoengineer.org?
  • Qualifications of the proposer;
  • Relation of the proposed activity/deliverable to the scope of the funds;
  • The amount of funds requested;
The Board will review all proposals and will select the top 5 proposals.

The top 5-10 proposals are forwarded to the donors who made a donation on or before March 1st 2009, through the donor’s restricted website (a href="http://donors.geoengineer.org">http://donors.geoengineer.org). Each donor will be allowed to vote for the project(s) she/he supports. Each donor has a number of votes that is directly proportional to the amount of her/his donation. This means that donors who made larger donations have greater influence in the final decision for funding. Donors may decide to distribute their votes to a number of projects, or simply vote for one.

The donors will have 1 month to review the submitted proposals and vote their preferred proposals. The votes of a donor who has not voted within the time allotted will be used at the discretion of the Donor’s Fund Review Board.

Final decisions will be announced by the end of August, 2009.
